Fabric stores such as Kaimuki Dry Goods allow community members to sew necessary items for our first responders and those in the community who may be at a higher risk. Selecting the right fabric in person is paramount to making the proper masks.

The small mom & pop shops do not have the capacity to fulfill online orders. I understand his concern for social distancing but he really dismissed the small businesses that can’t adapt to e-commerce as easily.

Please keep the fabric stores open so we - who are currently PPE, like sewing masks - can continue. These stores fill a much needed need for our communities.

Many sewers have come together to meet the need for wearing masks. When I was recently at Kaimuki Dry Goods, I noted their directions to maintain social distances, and everyone complied. We need this resource for fabric and other supplies to help those who cannot do this for themselves. Allow fabric stores to stay open.

Fabric Stores provide a vital service as we , patrons, are trying to sew masks for friends and family. Fabrics vary so it is important to allow customers to feel the fabric in order to make selection . I found a water resistive material that I found to be acceptable for my family as well as for some friends that work in a hospital. This will not replace official PPE but help to protect them when in the hospital, perhaps in between patients. Please consider allowing fabric stores to remain open with stipulations of wearing masks when in store as well as allowing stores to set up required spacing to enter and when in store. There is need for flexibility as all business access( both parking and store layout) is different. Thank you for your consideration on this matter. We are trying to help our friends, family and essential workers in many fields by continuing to sew face masks. Respectfully submitted, Ruth Yamakawa

Mr. Mayor,
Think of a fabric store like a grocery store -- people who make stuff need access to resources, and in this case, the stuff those people make directly supports your directive for folks to wear masks to protect others. Respectfully, If I get to pick out apples myself, why shouldn't I get to pick out fabric myself? Why let some stores use their infrastructure, and not others?

Only certain fabrics are the most effective, and so the customer needs to see what they are buying.

Fabric stores need to stay open, not just online sales. Many of the stores don’t have the parking lot or space to do curbside pickup as they are on small streets or one way streets. As long as they limit the people inside and use a mask they are as safe as any other store and fabric and sewing supplies are essential.

Please open the fabric stores. They are essential. I’m having to cut up my clothes to make masks for health care workers. I prefer to buy fabric from the store. I like my clothes and would rather wear them than cut them up.

I have been sewing cloth masks for health care providers, family, friends for a month now. The requests keep coming in. I would not be able to do this without the support of local fabric stores who have supplied me with elastic, thread and fabric. Please keep them open so sewers can continue to make facemasks.
