Mayor Kirk Caldwell, we, the residents of the City and County of Honolulu strongly urge you to classify fabric stores as an essential business and service under your emergency stay at home order.
With a shortage of face masks and other personal protective equipment, fabric stores have been providing a valuable service to residents as we endeavor to curve the spread of COVID-19 in Hawaiʻi.
While you have indicated that you are looking to create ways for fabric distributors to continue operating (possibly through a pick up only, or phone only system), many mask makers have identified a need to feel the fabric to inspect the weave before they purchase. Stores like Fabric Mart have already implemented social distancing policies for all customers.
Therefore, we humbly ask that you reconsider your recommendation and allow fabric stores to continue operating as an essential business.

You obviously don't sew or you would understand the need to see and feel the fabric used in making face masks, something deemed a critical element in preventing the spread of this modern day plague. How is that not essential?
Closing fabric stores now when people need fabric is short sighted and foolish. Not everyone has a computer or access to the internet. A brick and mortar fabric store needs to be kept open. Don’t tell people to go order online when they may not have the means to do so.
Closing fabric stores when most folks shopping there re buying supplies to make face masks is dangerous. As someone that is sewing masks to donate to first responders and health care providers, I have attempted to order online and the costs and time delay are significant.
Online ordering is fine for most but you can’t judge fabric without feeling it, and not all patrons are connected to online payment. People must have access to materials if govt expects maximum compliance with mask wearing guidelines
fabric & other sewing materials is the lifeline to handmade face masks. our group Masks4Hawaii has been able to facilitate donations of over 2000 masks to healthcare & essential workers from generous donors who see. They need their supplies!!
Pls increase the number of people who are allowed to shop from the current 2. Realistically base it on the square feet of the store, and increase number if the store can accommodate it while maintaining social distancing. Thank you
We need to keep the fabric stores open so that more people can get their masks made.

Fabric stores such as Kaimuki Dry Goods allow community members to sew necessary items for our first responders and those in the community who may be at a higher risk. Selecting the right fabric in person is paramount to making the proper masks.
