First, we want to commend you and the organizers who are bringing such a living legend to our campus. Her visit will be an incredible educational opportunity for our students and will showcase UT as an inquisitive and social justice oriented community. I am shocked to hear all of this and had no idea that Prof. Davis is even coming in the first place! These are valid and serious concerns! In addition, my department has scheduled an important public event at the museum that presents a conflict for us, as well as our respective audiences. Had we known about Prof. Davis' visit, we would have scheduled our event at another time and attended Davis' talk.
Angela Davis has played and continues to play a pivotal role in addressing the distressing issues of this country (note her speech at the recent "Women's March"). She has played a pivotal role in the development of both Black/Africana Studies and Women's and Gender Studies; and tens of thousands of students have been introduced to her intellectually through these disciplines. In addition, progressive community members would be enthralled to see and here one of their icons speak "truth to power". To keep this program closed because of "monetary gatekeeping" is a travesty. The program should be free and open to the public... An aside, BGSU, recently hosted Cornel West, his presentation was free and open to the public, and there were two overflow rooms, and live streaming at UT; we could do no less for Angela Davis, and our community.
These are valid concerns. The remedy of which will greatly contribute to UT's mission of inclusion in these troubling times!
Now, more than ever, we need our female African-American leaders to be among us and to teach us the lessons we seemed to have forgotten by electing a racist for president.
This fantastic event should be accessible to everyone.

Thank you to the authors of this petition for their forward and progressive thinking! I completely agree with the critique even while I am very enthusiastic about Professor Davis' visit. We MUST do this better as a University community and the language and requests of this petition are a good start.
