For the past 40 years minimum, Michigan State High Athletic Association (MSHAA) has implemented a rule that states no high school that is in the Association can travel over 300 miles for competition. The Association rational is they want to put academics first before athletics. Everyone will agree to that rational, however that point is mute because Michigan ranks 39th in the country in terms of academics. Whereas, states such as California and Connecticut that has no restrictions for travel purposes for their high schools, rank in the top 5 in the country in terms of academics.

With the band of this travel restriction in Michigan it will provide maximum exposure for our student/athletes. For example, our student/athletes can no participate in a national televised basketball tournament due to this rule! These games are televised on ESPN where the world is watching! Our kids in Michigan can not participate because of the 300 mile travel rule. That is counter productive to our student/athletes.
Are we preparing our student/athletes for college? The answer is no. High school is the time when we should start modeling the college expectations. We are speaking of the travel and management of time for the student/athletes in managing time for studies and competition. Just like they will have to do when they arrive on a college campus. Lets start preparing our student/athletes in Michigan for college and give them the maximum expose for the potential of multiple scholarship opportunities.
