An institute without pure maths has no right to call itself a university.

This is unjust

Totally ridiculous, and absolutely conterproductive to the stated goal of making "AI" a strength.

They clearly do not understand how the different branches of mathematical sciences are interwoven and interdependent and much greater than the sum of the parts. The proposed changes are a retrograde step for the whole of the science faculty.

The effect of the plan of Leicester management would be to destroy mathematics at Leicester: teaching as well as research.

Oddly enough, all of the research areas that are purportedly being upscaled by the ceasing of pure mathematics research include pure mathematics as a vital part of their infrastructure. So halting pure mathematics research seems, ultimately, self-destructive. I urge the Leicester University VC to reconsider.

Pure Mathematics is a key part of Scientific Research. Advances in Pure Mathematics continue expand human knowledge and contribute to research in many other areas of Science and Engineering. The last year has shown how important fundamental research is and how important it is to continue to invest in this area in the UK. As well as losing a number of extremely high quality researchers, ceasing Pure Mathematics at Leicester University would seriously reduce the University's international reputation and contributions to Scientific Research in the UK.

A short-sighted proposal which overlooks the increasing interaction of pure mathematics with many other disciplines.

Pure mathematics matters, and applied mathematics eventually borrows ideas from pure mathematics.

Awful to hear of such anti academic proposals being made in a university. Worrying that the people making the proposals clearly do not understand the bigger picture nor how pure maths research connects to other areas. This sounds like the sort of really bad “facepalm” idea you might hear if a group of management consultants got involved.

Good luck attracting promising students with no pure mathematicians around.

This is an ubelievable program, completely blind and unaware of the huge damage tu future generations. If the University of Leicester is unable to sustain costs, it is much better that they close.

Mathematics is not redundant and it's not wise to be so short-sighted.

Some people you can talk to, some just lecture because they have the truth by the tail and are self-eminent. This university VC seems both misplaced and over-inflated.
