As a doctoral student in computer science (with a background in pure maths), I note that my daily research is possible only through advances in pure mathematics. Conversely, my mathematical research is informed by my interests in computer science. In particular, I believe that excellence is shaped through strong interactions between foundational and applied departments/researchers.

Universities exist to generate knowledge. If Universities will not promote such an important field such as pure maths, then who will?

This has got to be one of the stupidest policy proposals I’ve seen in a while and that’s saying something considering this is the age of Brexit and Trump. That it comes from within the academy is astonishing and speaks to how far-reaching the current regressions in the society are.

Mathematics plays the most fundamental role in the ongoing industrial revolution. Is Leicester University aiming to set a record in going in the opposite direction?

Mathematics is the life blood of all physicists and engineers. As professionals we depend on the excellence of mathematicians in advancing and understanding of their field!

Leicester has an excellent history of maths teaching and research; and NOW is when HMG wants to boost science, so why throw away your heritage and a successful department? Please retain and enhance Math Dept, not cut it.

Mathematics is the foundation of pretty much every single advance we have made in the sciences over the last century or so. Removing it from the university seems incredibly short-sighted.

Pure Mathematics is the crucial foundation of many other subjects. There is no reason to sacrifice Pure Mathematics for anything else.

To talk about "academic excellence" by scraping fundamental research and firing excellent researchers is one the most depressing things I have ever heard. But I guess this is what happens when academic units are being "managed" by opportunists managers that care only about buzzwords like "reshaping excellence". It is really dangerous that there are people managing academia that think that we can do AI and DS without pure maths and TCS. What is the next step? Do Quantum Computing without linear algebra? Pathetic...

Best of luck to all professors, undergrads and members in the department.

It's quite depressing to hear that a VC who professes to be an expert in signal processing decides that pure mathematics has nothing more to contribute.

Funding and supporting fundamental research like mathematics, theoretical computer science, medieval literature is key to future progress. Math and tcs will bring you new insights into AI and data science, while medieval literature will ensure that the students can explain their work to the public. Eric Lander explains it here: https://danielskatzblog.wordpress.com/2015/06/22/eric-landers-argument-for-public-funding-of-basic-research/

This is incredibly short-sighted

Do they really want to create excellence in AI by removing Pure Mathematics? Are they serious? It's totally ridiculous.

It saddens me to read that the basics of computer science and the research we need to keep evolving the field. How else will we ensure that students have that foundation?

Pure math is important to physicist as a tool to develop new method.

What an unwise and shortsighted decision!

You don’t create excellence by removing excellent people!
