Pure mathematis is the subject with the best relation ever between expenses and society benefits , by far ... but, since the benefits arrive usually 30 years after or more (like Elliptic Curve Criptography, for instance ...), short view politians can not see that... Very sad ...

To ensure a future research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science requires *continuing* research in Pure Mathematics in order to allow for collaborations between pure mathematicians and those who are active in these desired areas. Practical advances have *always* been coupled with corresponding theoretical advances in knowledge. A decision to cease research in pure mathematics would be extremely short sighted; apart from anything else it would lead to a degradation of the quality of teaching of pure mathematics, some of which is *required* for students who will go on to be active in more applied areas.

With all due respect, but such a plan is appalingly shortsighted and contrary to any credible attempt to build any centre/department with a "research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science". I would strongly advise any student to sign up to such a department - and most prospective student will understand this. I used to have a higher opinion of the University of Leicester and I hope this will be reconsidered.

Pure mathematics is a vital part of mathematics. Just because something is not seen by the VC to be "useful" now does not mean that it won't be "useful" into the future. A potentially fatal mistake.

It is certainly not redundant!

This was a bad idea when it came up a few years ago. It is still a bad idea. It will cause significant reputational damage to the University of Leicester, and make it a less attractive place for students in mathematics and related areas.

Maths is the least redundant, requires humans to teach-not lessons.

The distinction between pure and applied maths is really artificial. One of the hottest topics in data science at the moment is topological data analysis, of which most of the researchers are mathematicians who were previously considered among the purest.

What exactly will they be teaching students that come to study Maths when they're removing almost all Maths teaching?

Mathematics is the foundation of the very programs you intend to fund.

This is embarrassing. It should be avoided, at any cost!

Disgraceful! Was the decision taken by real people, or AI assisted?

My work with our programme placing mathematicians in technology and industry confirms again and again, pure mathematics, fundamental mathematics is not just the foundation of AI/modelling/digitalisation/data science, but also it's future. Moreover, without a solid grounding in the foundational mathematics, the applications often are incorrectly applied with unfortunate consequences: example: careless application of Black Scholes equation contributing to the 2008 2009 market crash. Keep fundamental mathematics.

You cant make progress in applied maths without pure maths to go with it hand in hand

So u/graduates are not to be taught by those active in research? and pure mathematics has no value beyond its applications? This seems an ignorant, and anti-scholarly, position.
