Pure mathematics is at the root of the ideas behind AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science. Without good pure mathematics, University of Leicester students will be software operators. Bad software operators.

Having obtained a PhD in pure mathematics from Leicester in 2016 and witnessing first hand the dedication and wealth of experience of this world-class department, it's shocking to see these kinds of ill-informed decisions bring made at the executive level of the university.

Between this and the medieval literature studies, I'm starting to suspect that maybe University of Leicester needs better governance - one that can tell the difference between running a university and running a fast food joint.

The proposal to stop pure mathematics research at Leicester is terrible. This is an attack on fundamental research and on the mathematical community. It comes during a global pandemic when university staff have repeatedly gone to incredible lengths to maintain teaching and support their students. No one is redundant!

Closing down pure mathematical research at Leicester would be short-sighted and counterproductive: the other subjects that the university claims to wish to promote cannot properly thrive except as part of an ecosystem of which pure mathematics is an essential component. And that is not even to mention the substantial human cost. This is a disgraceful decision and I hope it will be quickly reversed.
