I assume you wish to maintain *any* credibility you may have as a serious establishment for scholarship? Then, I would suggest you consider what the removal of one of an subject that encapsulates just what it means to be human. A entity capable of producing profound, deep and beautiful results that are the very foundations of nearly every topic you have listed as reasons for its removal.

This is absurd! As an alumni of the Mathematics department at Leicester, I am appalled at this decision.

To ignore Maths (every branch of it) is to ignore the future! Leicester is doing itself a great disservice and a huge reputation hit.

As someone with a masters in Computer Science, currently pursuing a PhD: pure maths is essential *for many of these areas of research* that they want to replace them with. So much of the foundations of CS comes from mathematics; it used to be considered a subsection. Replacing pure maths research would be determined to the research at Leicester University.

To say that "to ensure a future research identity in AI ... requires ceasing research in pure mathematics" is beyond parody. Why is U. Leicester trashing its reputation as both an institute of research and an employer?

Pure maths is the well from which applications flow: I say this as an applied mathematician who works in the life sciences, far from the world of for-its-own-sake mathematics.

Leicester will not be a serious university without Pure Mathematics. Research identity in AI, computational modelling, digitalisation and data science requires a pool of mure mathematical expertise in the university and a supply of mathematically educated graduates, who cannot obtain that education from teachers who are not active researchers in pure mathematics.
