Mathematics is the language of science. If you train students in pidgin maths, we severely curtail our ability to do great science.

Whilst we appreciate the focus on modern and growing research fields, it goes without saying that without a solid basis in pure mathematics, none of these fields would even exist.

Without excellent Pure Mathematics you will end up missing crucial developments (happening now!) in Machine Learning and AI. There is a limit for playing with black boxes. And to open them you need fundamental research in Pure Mathematics and in Theoretical Physics

Research in Mathematics at Leicester is world-known and very important. It would be a shame to destroy it.

Having studied Mathematics at this university to a master level before completing a PhD in Artificial Intelligence with this very department, I am appalled that the continued waning of the already neglected pure mathematics division is even being considered. Over the eight years I was there, the wide variety of research areas flourished thanks to sharp minded lecturers which produced a strong cohort of students that gave fellow AI researchers like myself insight into approaching problems from different angles and expanding the field of mathematical knowledge. These profit driven measures that only exist to cut corners in an already decaying field shows a complete lack of interest in supporting students driven by curiosity and intrigue over rinsing every last penny from the system. Please put a halt to this and save the Pure Mathematics department before it’s too late.

It's really disappointing to see the university consider cutting research into the crucial foundations of more applied work.

The idea that three people (who are not even engaged in research) can provide acceptable-level academic teaching in mathematics is so ridiculously absurd that I find it hard to believe that this is not a premature April's fool joke.

Presently one understands why deep learning works. Solving this problem is a deep mathematical problem. Who, do you think, can solve it?

This is very short sighted

As a alumni of university of Leicester I am deeply disappointed by this decision. Pure mathematics is important and should no made redundant.

Pure math is the basis of the subjects that Leicester claims to want to promote - and, by extension, the applied sciences, including my very own: medicine. Signing this in solidarity with my pure math colleagues.
This is a ridiculous and short sighting move.

Abominable shortsightedness. Can't quite believe this.
Stop dumbing down our youth. Nuff said
The harmful effects of this decision will be extremely hard to reverse by a future University VC.
