Axing the very language used to develop the ideas you wish to prioritize is like removing linguistics to prioritize writing programs. Everything will crumble.

I, for one, wonder whether this petition is not too weak. The plan seems so ill considered, so grounded in complete ignorance of the role pure mathematics plays in the very areas its proposer(s) regard as the future "research identity" for the University of Leicester, that it would be appropriate to petition for the Vice Chancellor to resign or be removed from his post. His "vision" is a threat to the academic integrity of the University of Leicester, and indeed to its ability to claim to be a university at all.

It's beyond unbelievable that this petition even has to exist, to be frank. The University of Leicester would setting a dangerous precedent not just within a single (well-established) field but would be sending a signal that their mood could end the contract they are holding with any single researcher in the entire institution. Long live bureaucracy....

If this will go through, then it will indicate to all staff members and all potential staff members that there is no job security in the University of Leicester, even if you are brilliant. Therefore, avoid taking jobs there and if you did, you should always look for other options because the future might bleak.

Unfortunately, senior management at most universities does not understand the nature of academia. Most of these people are opportunists with no scientific ambition.

Pure Mathematics cannot be separated from applied research - my most recent works were on applications of automorphisms of types in category theory to cryptography. The attempt to follow the hype and claim that AI is the future without fundamental research is nonsensical: Artifical Intelligence without Intelligence. I would suggest to evaluate and censor (and severely) those who push forward these short-sighted reforms.

Shaping for vandalism, not excellence. Senior Management probably congratulate themselves on making “tough decisions”, but the self-congratulation is fatuous when the tough decision is as wrong as these plans.

If this reckless plan comes to fruition, it would be a devastating loss to the algebra community in the UK. Already the threat of it does damage to our entire field. Shame on the VC (Vulture Capitalist) who dreamed up such an idiotic plan, and who thinks they can educate students in science without an active research mathematics community. That would be a joke, if only it were remotely funny.
