Math Grade Weight

I believe that the math weight is an unfair way to grade our math because it forces students to do well in a testing setting and not all students are capable of doing so.

Both my 8th and 11th graders are struggling. I'm paying for a private tutor due to lack of actual teaching this year.

I normally do very well in school and I have an F in the class.

Agreed...repetition through assignments (ie- 40%) is needed to nail home the material. Assessments should be made of how well the material is understood by grading ALL assignments...and NO working with a partner. The areas a student is deficient should then be nailed home further, through extra assignments or a math lab. I feel the way material is taught today is done without this effort. It's just all about teaching to the test to meet Common Core standard levels established federally/state-wise.

I know it was a long time ago....but when I was in high school your final grade was a percentage of all of your grades together. There was no weighted grades. No grading on a curve. If you had a total of (example only) 10 papers turned in, a mix of assignments and tests - each of those scores/points total were divided by 10. That was your final grade. That's how it should be. We shouldn't pass kids just to have butts in a seat, to pass them in order to continue to get grants and funding. There is currently no consistency in the high school grading system. I have an email from one of my grandsons high school teachers, saying that tests are 60% of his grade. So, are tests 60% or 80% of their grades?? Or is it whatever percentage that the individual teacher decides on any given day? Keep it simple....Just my opinion.

Agree! Too much focus on assessment and not enough on retention!

I am signing because my daughter has struggled significantly with Mrs. German's class due to it not being Mrs. German but a long term sub.

As a former math teacher I am appalled that the weight is so unbalanced. The students are working to do as many assignments as possible but the assignments are only worth a handful of points!

I am in middle school and I also am a typical straight-A student. In algebra 1 because of the test that I just took dropped my grade to a c and before the test I had an A.

I believe that this grade weight is quite high for a high school class, but also for the environment that we are currently living in. I've noticed as a typically straight-A student that my grade drops drastically. I'm currently passing the class, but it feels challenging to keep that grade within an A range, let alone a B. I know that students who normally get average grades are struggling with this grade weight.

So has mine, and they just keep saying "sorry that is the teachers' decision." It is really annoying.

This is something my family has already reached out to the school about and been offered no help or alternative. This is setting students up for failure.

Virtual learning is hard enough. Don’t make it harder than it needs to be. Set them up for success!

Weighted math is stupid. That’s kids struggle enough
