Honestly I did very well on the first midterm which I felt accurately tested us on that course material, however I only did so well because I was hounding the prof outside of class to answer my questions, and he was very rude about it. This time around I was discouraged from his attitude before the first midterm and the archived exams were removed from the math website and so I did 20% worse on this exam.
This exam, while reflecting theories we saw in class, was extremely poorly written and vague. Were he to have just given straight up questions akin to those on previous midterms and from the textbook that could just as easily have tested the same material in a way we are familiar with I feel everyone could have done better.
This class is in serious need of a lab section.

I have never experienced much anxiety before this... It's Thursday night I can't sleep and I've been having panic attacks all day thinking about this course, my transcript, what my parents are gonna think and how my scholarships will be affects.
The feeling of being powerless after putting so much effort is absolutely destroying my mental health.
Why do I have to put up with this...

I agree that the test was unfair even if I did do relatively well, though I would say that adding an optional assignment would be unfair for those of us who might not have the extra time in these coming months. If it is the case that a constant is added to each of our grades (and, as such, fairly preserves relative grading and doesn't punish people without extra time) then I am fully on your side. Perhaps the 2.5 marks removed from most of our first exams as a result of him (self-admittedly) not communicating what he wanted us to do on his exams should be added back on to our marks.

Like the previous comments, I have spent more than 30 hours studying for both midterms. I did all the practice questions he assigned us from the textbook and still got a really low mark like the rest of us. Now I am stuck with having to make a decision between dropping the course and not being to take other courses since this is either a prerequisite or corequisite. Additionally, I risk losing the scholarships I have earned.

I spent 30+ hours studying for each midterm, going over the notes and every single textbook question (which the prof recommended for practice) and I feel like I would've done the exact same on both midterms had I not studied.
I consider myself a very good student, having achieved grades of A/A+ in MATH 1230, MATH 1232, and MATH 1240, but taking this course has been nothing like any other math courses I have taken at the UofM. We were given no practice questions that resembled what was handed out for the midterms, and having received a grade that won't guarantee me more than (maybe) a C+, I'm faced with two options:
If I VW this course, I am not able to take it again until next Fall, which will severely impact my academic schedule, not to mention cost me more money since I'll have to retake this course, and won't be able to take higher level courses that depend on this grade.
If I get an extremely low grade, and likely fail, I will lose my scholarship, and have to resort to student loans to continue my education.
This course is supposed to teach actuarial students how to calculate partial derivatives, and iterated integrals, but the midterms we had to write for this class were in no way a reflection of what is expected from second year students.
This is causing me (and other students, I'm sure) an unbelievable amount of stress, which is seriously affecting my mental health, as well as my performance in other classes.
I've heard from past students that the way this course is being presented now is drastically different than it was in previous years. I don't find it fair that this section of students is being impaired over something that is beyond our control, and by the sheer number of complaints I have heard, (not to mention the signatures and comments on this petition) the majority of my classmates feel the same way.

This class is not based on the outline which we got at the beginning of the term! Exams are not based on the recommend exercises at all.

I received A+ in MATH 1700 (And MATH 1500 as well). I've had to completely supplement the instructor's teachings with outside resources. The classes consist entirely of formal (and unfamiliar) notation that do not facilitate learning whatsoever. I've been able to do all of the recommended exercises (and more) thanks to the textbook and outside resources and feel that I have a very good grasp of the subject matter. I have been able to find multiple past midterms and completed them without difficulty. The first midterm in this class was unexpected and was marked archaically (negative marking). The second midterm was just completely outrageous and inconsistent with the course. Students with As and A+s coming into this course are worried they're going to fail, doesn't that seem odd?

I had gone over ever practice problem at least three times and the practice midterm given at the study session multiple times and this midterm was nothing like any of the questions. This was the first time in my university career that I had sat down in an exam where I thought to myself “I don’t know how to answer these questions”.

I have got an A in Math 1300, 1500 and 1700. I worked hard and was very prepared for the second midterm. I do not feel what so ever that either midterm was reflective of the practice questions that were assigned. I knew how to complete all practice questions (and variations) and also understood how each of them worked. The second mid term was horribly written.

I would consider my self a good Math student, I've gotten A+ in MATH 1700, A+ in MATH 1500 and an A in MATH 1300.
I follow the same recipe every time. Show up to class take good notes, read the text/watch YouTube videos on topics I don't understand fully and do all the recommended problems.
The first Mid term I was absolutely shocked when he gave me the questions sheet. None of them were anything like I've seen before. Nothing like the review session that the Math department organised, nothing like any of the old exams that were on the Math departments website. I ended up getting a 52%...
Going into the 2nd Mid Term with over 60+ hours of reading his notes, reading the textbook, doing every problem in units 14.2- 15.2 and I felt as though I mastered the marital in the textbook. I took every old exam/mid term I could from the Math departments website getting 85%+ every time. And I felt there was noting he could ask that I wouldn't get. I sit down for Mid term 2 only to see 4 questions that were no where near the difficulty of the recommended problems or any of the previous exams for this course. If the assigned textbook for this course had problems similar to his exam I wouldn't be complaining and I would have done much better. I tried my best and got a 60%. However I feel like I wasted 60+ hours of my life over the past week and a half to receive the worst grade in my life. I am now looking at getting a D and if the final is anything like the last test I'm going to fail and I will have to withdrawal from 2 courses next semester and delay my graduation.
And if I get a D there goes my scholarship and funding to go to school... I'm screwed....
I have no intentions of receiving a graduates degree in Mathematics. I just want to become an Actuarial and learn the tools to pass the Actuarial Exams. This is a 2000 level course required for Actuarial Students' and he is treated us as if we are in a 4000 level course and are all Graduate students'.
