Hey Class,

As you are likely aware, many people have had concerns about the way Math 218 has been going. While we did bring up any issues conveyed to us in the meeting with the professors that we had mid-late September, not much has been improving, and the number of concerns we've been getting has gone up.

A number of students requested that we initiate a petition, to ask the department to assign a new professor to us for the rest of the term. In order for anything to move forward on that front, we would need the majority of the class to be in agreement (90-100%).

If you feel that a different professor will be beneficial to you and your understanding of the course, please sign the petition.

As always, feel free to add comments/concerns you may have, or message us directly.

Thanks.

Updates

October 6, 2018

The feedback arriving in my inbox confirms that many of you are struggling with the current pace and clarity of the course material. We are carefully documenting these experiences to ensure the department understands the depth of our frustration when we eventually present this collective request.

October 6, 2018

Seeing the consensus grow within this group signifies how deeply we all care about our academic success in this course. It is clear that the frustration many of us feel is shared throughout the lecture hall. This momentum gives me confidence that our request for a change will be taken seriously by the department.

Kevin seems like a nice enough guy, but his lectures are difficult to follow and, in my opinion, the assignments and quizzes are poorly structured - the assignments are difficult and time-consuming. In addition, the quizzes have cumulative marking and are generally based on assignment questions without taking up the assignments first, so if there was ever something you didn't understand, you lose marks on both. As a result, myself and some of my classmates have received our lowest-ever marks on some of his quizzes.

Seems like a well enough fellow. However I cannot say the same for the teaching at the moment. The content is made far more difficult than it should be due to an extremely fast pace alongside little to no explanation. He should not immediately start off with an application question when introducing a new concept. Additionally, the assignments take far to long to accomplish when compared to other assignments, and the lack of learning from his teaching style does not make anything easier. Finally, he seems to post questions on assignments that he flat out has not covered.

In my opinion Kevin Lamb is not a good professor. He goes through content far too quickly, also he does not clearly explain his steps or work when going through problems leaving us confused as to where certain part of the solution came from. Since the meeting between the profs and the class reps took place I have noticed no changes in Kevin Lambs teaching style. I would like to add that his inability to teach in a way that is easy to understand to the majority of the class can be a large contributing factor to low final marks as content gets harder.

I need a better professor for this course. I can't follow his pace in class and his assignment is time-consuming.

I find that Kevin has not been very responsive to the constrictive feedback the class has given him and is inhibiting the class from the learning experience and quality of teaching that the students deserve.

The method of teaching is not helpful for me. The questions are vague and lectures are difficult to follow.

The degree to which Professor Lamb's lectures are confounding to students is such that it would almost appear that he runs them with a malicious intent. While I know that this isn't the case, it should also be noted that the poor conveyance of information within an engineering course poses a risk, not only to the GPA and well-being of the class, but also to public safety, as the concepts from this course are expected to be fundamental to our careers moving forward.

Professor Lamb is trying but his lectures are very unorganized and confusing
