In 1975, Mark Schwiefert, a convicted felon and escaped prisoner from Florida, took the life of a rural Ohio man, Kenneth R. Shaw. In cold blood and without remorse, he took Kenneth from his wife and three children; one of which was only 6 weeks old. The widow was left to raise the children on her own. The Ohio Parole Board [hereinafter Board] feels Mr. Schwiefert has gone through enough rehabilitation to enter back into society. Mr Schwiefert has not shown any sort of remorse to the family. For someone to be rehabilitated to the point of release from a maximum security prison one should have acknowledgment of their crime or actions and ask for some type of forgiveness or sincere remorse to whom they have wronged. The first part of any type of recovery, is you have to have admit what you have done. From AA to drug addiction to cheating on a test, acceptance for what was wrongly done is a step into the right direction to live as a better person. The State of Ohio has been implementing early release of prisoners. Mr. Schwiefert's original sentence was 20 years to life but is 36 years enough? Is that enough time to repay a grieving widow for all the years of pain? What about the children? What about the grandchildren? The absence of a father or grandfather in a kid's life is devastating. The family has a full parole board hearing scheduled for March 14, 2011 in Columbus, Ohio to petition the Board again to keep this man in prison. The widow is fearful that he will return to her house. She is scared he will act upon his instincts again. Anyone who has lost so much shouldn't have to continually relive this constant fear and pain. Every two years when the Mr. Schwiefert's parole is revisited, the family must meet with a Board member to state their case before the Board meets formally to discuss the details. Most every two years, the family has to relive this pain, tears, heartache and frustration with little or no understanding from the Board as to why they want to release Mr. Schwiefert. Over 3 decades have past. Time does mask the pain but the thorn will always be there; tearing the heart and soul of the victims. Members of this group (supporters, family, and friends of the family) feel that Mark Schwiefert should remain in prison. In the past 36 years that he has been incarcerated, and yet Mr. Schwiefert continues to silence and fails to acknowledgment any wrong doing or sympathy to the family. In a face-to-face session, the youngest asked, "Why did you do what you did." He couldn't answer. He never said a word in response. Ashamed? Possibly. That was 3 years ago. And to this day he still won't say a word in response as to why. Help the family spread the news of this wrong doing and keep justice where it should be. This maximum security prisoner is about to be released. He could be in your neighborhood! Sign this petition to keep him locked up!!
