Not being able to walk when you are within 6 credits or waiting to sit for license is a new rule that was established under Admiral Carpenter. No student should receive their degree before they have finished ALL of their requirements. In the case of the Licensing Program, a student MUST pass all of their classes for their degree AND all 7 Coast Guard Tests (this is nothing new and has been that way for many many years). A degree is awarded only after all of this is complete. Allowing someone to walk in the ceremony, while receiving an empty envolope (and not picking up a degree after), taking the pictures, and being with their classmates is important. It needs to go back to the way it used to be.

All I need to do is pass license. But because of finals I can not sit for license before the ceremony. So now I choose. Pass my classes and not walk. Or try to pass my finals and pass license and potentially fail both cuz

I am one of those not graduating because of this rule unfortunately. I am at peace with it although it will be quite sad to see my friends walk without them.

It is just wrong. By not letting them walk is saying their work together and support of each other means nothing, Maritime is sending the wrong message.

This does not sound fair. Anyone within 6 hours of graduating will complete their program. They should be allowed to participate in the ceremony with their fellow graduates.

I am the parent of a five year student. She has worked so hard to attain this goal. She would be the first generation ever to graduate from college. Her family was looking forward to her walking and is extremely disappointed to not be able to experience the joy and pride that comes with such a monumental event in our family. I understand not receiving her diploma until she passes license but this is such an injustice to all the hard work these kids have had to endure. I respectfully ask Maritime to reconsider these terrible injustice.
