COVID-19 has been a devastating tragedy to many family members especially the elderly. We have seen this first hand with our Grandmother, Margarita Ramos. We trusted the Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic to treat our grandmother because of their access to various treatments. We specifically asked Dr. Rai, the medical director at the Cleveland Clinic ICU, if they would consider her for the ECMO treatment. A treatment that allows the lungs to recover from the damage caused by COVID-19. After persistently asking the doctors to consider her for the treatment, they responded by saying we are not there yet. After crucial time has passed and Margarita's health declined we were hopeful that they would finally move forward with the ECMO treatment. We met with the doctors and they stated she is not a candidate because of her age, weight and oxygenation. As we persisted they continued to mention age again and again. Margarita has had no kidney failure, heart failure or any other medical condition that would deem her unfit for this procedure.

Margarita Ramos, alongside her husband Saul Ramos have been active members of our community for over 30 years. Creating programs to feed, and house the homeless and rehabilitate addicts. For many years, their successful prison program has not only helped inmates while incarcerated but has also played a vital part in their functional Integration back into society. Countless inmates are now outstanding contributors to society because of the tireless dedication of Saul and Margarita Ramos to our city.

People fly from around the country to be healed at the Cleveland Clinic. We expect nothing less for one of our very own.The Cleveland Clinic should not consider how much life she has lived, but how much life she has left to give.

Please let us know if there is a hospital with lesser criteria that would take in a vulnerable demographic such as the elderly.

COVID-19 ha sido una tragedia devastadora para muchos miembros de la familia, especialmente los ancianos. Lo hemos visto de primera mano con nuestra abuela, Margarita Ramos. Confiamos en los médicos de la Cleveland Clinic para tratar a nuestra abuela debido a su acceso a varios tratamientos. Le preguntamos específicamente a el Dr. Rai, director medico de la ICU de Cleveland Clinic, si la considerarían para el tratamiento con ECMO. Un tratamiento que permite que los pulmones se recuperen del daño causado por COVID-19. Después de pedir persistentemente a los médicos que la consideraran para el tratamiento, respondieron diciendo que todavía no habíamos llegado a ese punto. Después de que pasó un tiempo crucial y la salud de Margarita se deterioró, teníamos la esperanza de que finalmente pudieran seguir adelante con el tratamiento de ECMO. Nos reunimos con los médicos y nos dijeron que no es candidata por su edad, peso y oxigenación. Mientras insistíamos, continuaron mencionando la edad una y otra vez. Margarita Ramos, junto a su esposo Saul Ramos, han sido miembros activos de nuestra comunidad por más de 30 años. Creando programas para alimentar y albergar a personas sin hogar y rehabilitar adictos. Durante muchos años, su exitoso programa penitenciario no solo ha ayudado a los reclusos mientras estaban encarcelados, sino que también ha desempeñado un papel vital en su integración funcional de regreso a la sociedad. Innumerables reclusos son ahora destacados contribuyentes a la sociedad por la incansable dedicación de Saúl y Margarita Ramos a nuestra ciudad.

La gente vuela de todo el país para ser curada en Cleveland Clinic. No esperamos menos para uno de los nuestros. La Cleveland Clinic no debe considerar cuánta vida ha vivido, sino cuánta vida le queda para dar.
