Currently in New South Wales a parliamentary education topic is only required during primary school education, in Year 6, and it is a very generalised unit of work. This leads to a big lack of knowledge about the parliamentary system and the process needed to make a law. This petition aims to change that by including a compulsory unit of work to be included in the national curriculum, in Year 8 HSIE (Human Society and its Environment), which would educate young people and the parliamentary and legal systems as well as giving an insight into the political parties and systems of government.

The momentum we have built shows that people are finally fed up with the pathetic lack of political literacy in our schools. The Department of Education cannot ignore us forever while we demand that students actually understand how their own government works.

Kids these days have no clue how laws are actually made until its too late. Needs to be part of the curriculum for sure.
