There has been in increase of athletes deaths due to a condition called Cardiomyopothy. Cardiomyopathy, which literally means "heart muscle disease," is the deterioration of the function of the myocardium (i.e., the actual heart muscle) for any reason. People with cardiomyopathy are often at risk of arrhythmia or sudden cardiac death or both.[1] Cardiomyopathy can often go undetected, making it especially dangerous to carriers of the disease.It has claimed the lives of young vibrant athletes all across the country and recently a Tight End for the Arkansas Razorbacks Garrett Uekman. With a screening his death and many others could have been prevented if the NCAA and athletic programs make it mandatory to have all athletes screened for this common overlooked but deadly condition.
