Making Ryrie and Axford Avenue Safer

Our son's car, parked on the verge, was written off by a driver who lost control speeding through the "slow point" in Ryrie Avenue, between Axford and Throssell.

We have owned our house on Ryrie Avenue near Throssell St. for over twenty years and have lived permanently here for five. As others have noted, in that time the quiet, peaceful residential street we purchased into has evaporated. What many do not seem to realise is that the problem was created when the designated high traffic road Thelma Street was closed off at Canning Highway and blocked in front of Penhros. The considered opinion at the time was this was due to lobbing from Penhros for reasons that are obvious if you inspect the changes that were very beneficial to the school. A Google map viewing clearly shows Thelma street was the equivalent of South Terrace, being the only streets with an unbroken and straight line due West to East. They were constructed specifically for the purpose of heavy traffic through mainly low residential areas. Ryrie Avenue and others were not. Heavy traffic has increased dramatically (I even saw a B Double road train pass our house recently) and at school drop off time we are barely able to exit or enter our driveway. I have seen traffic backed up as far as one can see in both directions along Ryrie avenue. Combine this with the parked vehicles on the road verges, Hoons that love the challenge of tearing through the obstacles at all hours of the night and all that has been mentioned by others, we agree that it is way past time for a solution that is not just a short term Band aid.

Should make no right turn on Canning highway going to Perth, into Ryrie Avenue. This will divert traffic to Todd Avenue where speed humps already erected and cars are forced to slow down

There is no doubt traffic has increased on Ryrie Ave since the new rounabout at Hayman has been completed. Cars, trucks, buses, and all manner of heavy vehicles are using Ryrie as a thorough fare to Canning Highway. Happy to see some speed arresters like those on Todd ave which may help to direct the traffic up Murray St to South Terrace and access Canning High way at the traffic lights. The increased traffic on Ryrie Ave is unacceptable. There is a group of enthusiasts that also delight in running Ryrie ave some nights 30 plus cars very loud and very fast.

I have recently corresponded with the Mayor and our two Councillors on this vital issue. Streets parallel to Ryrie must also share the traffic load,

I've seen many cars drifting and speeding down the roads. It's very loud and dangerous.

We walk our dogs at Ryrie park and are becoming increasingly frustrated at the volume of traffic on Ryrie

I live at 23 Ryrie Avenue. I am very concerned about the increase in traffic along Ryrie Avenue and the speed of the traffic. It has certainly made the immediate area less safe and less attractive for residents.

We moved to Ryrie between Axford and Canning Highway in 2014. Even though we have only been in the home for a short period of time we have noticed an increase in in both the volume and speed of traffic. I have lived and worked in the city of South Perth for most of my adult life life and I realise that many areas in South Perth are experiencing similar traffic congestion problems. How ever Ryrie Avenue to me is now getting dangerous. Traffic speed through large inclines and declines with less then 50 meters visibility is simply scary. Three ideas I think might relieve some traffic are, 1) I would really like to see a 40 zone past the park for the school as many children are crossing Ryrie to get to Penrose. 2) An island at the intersection of Ryrie and Canning highway. I cant understand why cars can turn right onto canning highway from Ryrie avenue as I have seen many close calls. Also cars turning right into Ryrie Avenue from Canning highway affect traffic flow from the Thelma street lights. 3) This is out there but why not re-open Thelma Street between Penrose and the Park? Why do cars destined for Penrose have to snake though multiple residential streets when Thelma already has a set of lights at one end and a massive roundabout at the other.

I live in Ryrie between Axford and Canning Highway. What was once a quiet avenue has become a major through road with buses, trucks, work vehicles etc etc thundering past. Since the inception of the roundabout at Thelma and Hayman the volume of traffic has increased considerably. A few weeks ago I was waiting for my daughter to pick me up. I saw her slow down and indicate right to turn into our driveway - when the ute (with trailer) behind her just overtook her, causing her to brake forcefully. She was very shaken by the experience. Come and sit on my verandah and watch the road. Amazing things happen, from speeders to ditherers to hoons to the social media junkies (the ones who can't wait until they get home to read their messages!) It seems that in my area of Ryrie speed is a major concern. Once drivers have reached the top of the hill either at Axford or from the Canning it seems to become a racetrack with little or no regard for the neighbourhood. I have seen a car in the evening fly up from the Canning and side swipe a parked car. Of course, he didn't bother to stop. Something definitely has to be done. Debbie's idea of restricting access to / from Canning would be a great idea. If there's already calming devices on Todd and some put in on Ryrie then through traffic will probably return to the major roads. Oh for a peaceful Sunday again.

Would certainly like to have a clear plan which will limit further growth in traffic load down Ryrie and keeps traffic speeds down. Would like to see a median strip at the Ryrie/Canning Hwy junction as turning right out of Ryrie is dangerous. I accept that Ryrie is a natural cut-through, but would like to see some good planning that encourages the traffic to be sensibly limited and shared around. For example South on-ramp from Manning Hwy to Freeway would help so there is a role here for the State and Federal governments. Would also like some more traffic calming between Axford and Throssell, speeds seem to pick up here as people tend to naturally accelerate from or into the hill. Perhaps a permanent speed camera like they use in the UK with revenue used to improve road/bike safety around Collier and Penrhos?

We live opposite the park and have noticed cars speed along the strip daily. The school traffic doesn't worry us but the speeding does. We support getting calming speed humps like Todd Avenue. Even getting the police to do random speed checks might make people slow down. Cars speed down all the avenues though. Only just last week, I almost got cleaned up at the intersection of Axford and Bessell. The car was doing in excess of 90km/h down Bessell and when I looked right and left and right to cross there was no cars. Some how out of nowhere a car came speeding down. I got given a finger and a horn and was astounded by the drivers speed.

We have lived in Ryrie Ave opposite the park since 1984. The park is used extensively for family activities, dog exercise and sport. The residential speed limit is rarely adhered to, even with 20kph slow points in use! Heavy vehicle traffic is now common place. We accept daily school traffic generated by Penrhos but the increasing through traffic at high speed is of concern.

I have lived in Ryrie Ave for many years. I accept that there is school traffic between 8am and 8.30am and 3pm to 4pm as this is parents main access to the school. What I have noticed over the last few years is an increase of traffic outside these hours. Since the new roundabout on Hayman I can hear constant traffic from early in the morning. My home is near the top of the hill and leaving my driveway has become increasingly difficult and dangerous. More cars are parking on the street as well which adds to the problem. Making access into Ryrie Avenue restricted at Canning Highway would probably be the easiest solution.

I am a resident of Ryrie Ave and agree that the traffic and speed of the traffic is terrible. Some mornings, it is almost impossible for me to reverse out of my driveway because of the traffic. I now always reverse into my garage so I can drive out! The traffic is getting worse as Penrhos College has increased the number of intake students due to a double streaming approach in the Junior School. This has had an impact on the traffic volume in Ryrie and turning into Axford Streets. On Saturday 12.02.2017 morning I woke to a crashing car in my front yard. The young man lost control of his car when he turned out of Axford Street into Ryrie Street. He was clearly travelling too fast and lost control of his car. He narrowly missed my front fence, letter box and a very large tree. I have photo's of this recent accident and would offer this in support of reducing traffic and speed in Ryrie and Axford Streets. We need a round-about at the intersection of Ryrie and Axford Street. Ryrie Ave also needs speed traps. Traffic lights are also needed at the end of Ryrie Ave and the intersection of Canning Hwy. I would be happy to help lobby this further.

Axford Street resident. Anecdotally, I have noticed significantly more traffic with the start of the school year. The issue of traffic congestion is compounded by the increase in street parking along both these streets, both private and commercial vehicles. This represents both a safety risk, as well as a loss of amenity for the residents of the area.

Ryrie resident for over 20 years and the increase is traffic gets more and more every year. We would definitely be in favour of efforts to reduce traffic up and down Ryrie. Another issue is that people cut through Ryrie to get to Canning Highway that live in Vic Pk/E Vic Park.
