We started with a few, but to make a Safer Phuket, we need thousands - and you can make it happen. Just sign our online petition and it gives us a mandate that cannot be ignored.

We will be advocating a move to international safety standards within Phuket's coastal waters. We will translate your voice and commitment into positive action that will save lives and move Phuket to a new era of safer coastal waters.

Updates

January 7, 2014

I have been spending my mornings speaking with local boat operators and families who have lost loved ones to preventable accidents at sea. Their stories confirm that our push for international safety standards is not just a policy preference but a desperate necessity for these waters.

January 7, 2014

Seeing this kind of momentum feels surreal because I remember the nights after the accident when I worried nothing would ever change. This support proves I am not alone in wanting these waters to be safe for everyone.

Correct beach management is urgently needed...this must link to operating and regulatory change in the coming years.

As a yachtsman who has cruised extensively off Thailand's east and west coasts, I have to support this, and urge others to do so in the hope - vain though it may well prove to be - that Thailand adopts a broad safety culture which starts to value equally the lives of both Thai's and foreigners whether on land or sea.

The days when Phuket was a sleepy 'anything goes' backwater are long gone and it's high time safety standards on the water - the island's main attraction - caught up with the onshore progress. Personally, and through IMAGE asia, I am delighted to have the opportunity to support this long-overdue initiative.

Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to continue that counts.
