Right now, West Shore Rd. at White's Beach is temporarily routed to behind the beach & picnic area for 3 months during the summer. For the other 9 months, the road switches so it runs along the top of the beach, dividing the waterfront & picnic areas. The old roadway is a hazard - it is a straightaway that is literally a few feet from beachgoers. People have been hit by stones kicked from passing cars as they sit & enjoy the beach. During the off-season months, the old roadway requires everyone to cross the road. In the summer it's a dusty eyesore. Making the road reroute permanent will improve beach safety for the off-peak months. It will also allow the Rec. Commission to extend the grassy area to the edge of the waterfront, replacing the old roadway with a much nicer picnic area. Please sign this petition in support of making the reroute permanent. (South Hero voters only, please!) The results will be presented to the South Hero Selectboard, which may take action to make the reroute permanent if we can show there is broad support in the community for this change.
