Given the current situation taking place across the world in regards to the Covoid-19 epidemic, many colleges have switched to online learning only, or in some cases ended the semester early to give students time to handle themselves due to job loss and financial insecurity. Seminole State College addressed the situation by switching to online learning. Although switching to online learning seems like a great idea to combat the situation, it doesn't address the situation that many students face. Receiving an education is extremely important, but it can be argued that working to maintain a roof over one's head and having food to eat for themselves or their family is more important in these times.

  • College is meant to build positive memories and gauge a student's ability to be successful in an academic environment. The home of a student that is dealing with financial instability, job loss, food shortages, sick family members, or siblings is not an ideal academic environment, so it isn't reasonable to ask students to perform their best in a high-stress environment given the pandemic situation.

Therefore, we as students and staff are calling for an end the semester with current grades (this would also keep current GPAs for the semester. So, "exempt" assignment grades will not alter the overall course grade for students that don't choose to further submit assignments) to allow students to focus on their home lives and the stress this situation is presenting for everyone. It is more imperative to maintain mental and financial health in hard times than to try and balance school with this growing situation. We as students are willing to forgo any reimbursement of financial aid given how far into the semester we are. The money should be used to support our institution and the amazing staff that work there. They too have much going on in their personal lives and should not see a financial loss because students are asking for reimbursement.

  • In order to end the semester now, yet still offer students the opportunity to submit completed assignments (as some courses allow students to work ahead), we ask that for all assignments that would be missed due to closure are entered with a grade "exempt". By entering an "exempt" grade, professors would not need to alter their current grading system to allow students to further submit or finish the course as is. This would save valuable time for both students and professors.

The administration at Seminole State College thinks we are going to just quietly accept this impossible situation while we struggle to keep our homes and feed our families. This surge in support proves they are dead wrong and shows them exactly what the student body deserves.

I understand your concern. If you read the last bullet point, we are asking for an option to allow students to further submit assignments to help better their grades if they chose to do so. Essentially we are allowing students to end the semester, or continue to submit assignments. This is so that we can all get the best of the situation.

I understand that there are students that can not finish the semester due to what is happening and that ending the semester will help a lot, but For me I need the grades that I have paid money and put work into getting and I would like to finish my term to get the highest possible grade that I can and really need. Perhaps I’m not understanding the details. But after coronavirus I have a future and a program to get into to which solely depends on my grades.

I have access to the internet and have the ability to get straight a's in a well rounded environment but I also realize that it's not the same for everyone. It makes more sense to be pass fail
