I have had my bicycle and other smaller items stolen in recent weeks. Earlier, my husbands work truck and tools stolen TWICE with very little response from the police besides "call your insurance company." This is unacceptable.

My wife walks to work in Ballard and has been harassed by members of the RV camper population. I'm tired of watching the same transients canvasing the parked cars on Ballard Ave. I never see any cops walking the beat in downtown Ballard-- probably because they are powerless to do anything anyway. I feel like I'm on my own with respect to public safety. I don't believe Mike O'Brien or Mayor Murray care about the Ballard neighborhood. They seem perfectly fine with aggressive transients harassing the other 99% of us. Apparently being homeless is a free pass on crime. Yes, homelessness is not a crime, but committing crimes while homeless still IS crime. If we had more than 30% voter turnout, maybe we could vote in somebody that would change the situation. And I am willing to pay higher taxes to get cops in my neighborhood, enforcing the law.

In the past year, I've had to change my walking routes and have had to contact police due to harassment by street people. People on my street have experienced theft of bikes and other items we were once able to keep in our front yard areas. The filth from trash, empty bottles, and needles litters our front yards. If everyone has "rights", where are ours to feel and BE safe and secure in our homes and neighborhoods?

I work at the Postal Carrier Annex in Ballard and I don't feel safe with the drug users and the theives that congregate in tents and RV's around my place of employment. They roam through our fenced-in parking lot, trying car doors, throw needles over our fence and leave mounds of garbage wherever they go. Please help us law-abiding citizens!

Residents and businesses deserve better police attention. You've taken away our bicycle cops and we want them back!

We have had our house broken into and our friend's car stolen in front of our house. And I can not even count how many times our car has been broken into this year. We no longer can have packages delivered to our house for fear of theft. This is happening because they no the police are going to do nothing about it.

I have lived here for four and a half years and have noticed a significant deterioration in the environment over the past year and a half. I believe that this is due to the city's and our present representative Mike O'Brien's directive to law enforcement to not enforce the law with regards to the transient population. At the same time the city is enforcing the law in the University District and downtown which is pushing this problematic population into our area. Enough is Enough!

Population of Magnolia: 19,107
# of dedicated police officers serving Magnolia: ? (Cannot find statistics online)
Population of Mill Creek, WA: 18,828
# of dedicated police officers serving Mill Creek: 25 (Mill Creek is obviously different in that they are an incorporated city and have their own dedicated police department)

I am a fourth generation Ballard gal and I am deeply concerned about the increased criminal activity in our area. We have a severe drug epidemic, illegal campsites everywhere garbage and SUVs piling up all over Ballard. The police have been told to stand down regarding all of the illegal camping going on. The situation is completely out of control and public health and safety are the primary goals we need to be focusing on. Doing nothing is making the situation worse. I want Ballard back, I don't want to be afraid to walk on the Burke Gilman Trail which is one block from my house. I also don't want to be afraid that my dog will step on hyper dermic needles walking up through the Golden Gardens steps. Neighbors are talking about hiring private police officers on our dime. We are paying taxes therefore we should be be heard that there is a real crisis in Ballard. It is so disappointing to see what my cute Scandinavian town has turned into. Please please please, we need action to be taken now. Get these drug addicted people and ill legal campers out of our public property. What can I and the neighbors do, to help the city of Seattle help US?

I moved to Phillard (Phinney-Ballard) from the Central District knowing that crime is everywhere, but hoping it would be somewhat better - definitely safer to walk the neighborhood and not worry about meth heads trying to break in your home. Clearly a disappointment. I actually had better police response in the CD than North of the city. I am all for the compassion of helping the homeless, but then you cannot turn your backs on the people who sustain the city in buying homes, supporting the local merchants and who actually make neighborhoods go from a noun into a verb: thriving & engaging neighborhoods.

I have owned a business in downtown Ballard for 19 years and I have not seen the crime been this bad in a decade. homeless people coming into my shop shoplifting slurring derogatory words to me and my customers, threatening us with knives. try to go into my shop one night at 11 PM when there were homeless people sleeping in my doorway not letting me in my own business and threatening me!! Home break ins,b ikes stolen out of my garage people walking up to my front porch at midnight banging on my door shouting threatening things. we have to have more police presence. The downtown business associate has hired a private security company this season to help keep us safe at the cost of $5000. all because the city is not doing anything for us. Ballard is runover by homeless people Commons Park downtown Ballard locks, not even safe to walk or park anymore without being accosted by drunks and meth addicts. we need police presence and help now before this city is totally going to the dogs.

The rv & trailer problem in my neighborhood is at it's height. I witness numerous drug transactions a week to and from my place of work on W. Commodore Way and I am sick and tired of these people being allowed to get away with it with no intervention from the city or local police!
