Make Seagulls Happen
With the American Ornithological Society's decision to rename all birds named after people, let's seize the moment and give the world what it has been asking for: The seagull. As of yet, there has never been a bird officially named a "seagull" in North America, but the word has been used synonymously with all gulls for ages. Birders spend their whole lives correcting the rest of the world every time they improperly say "seagull" instead of just "gull." The Heerman's gull (Larus heermanni) has a range restricted to mainly the coastal regions of western North America and it's named after a person. It's the perfect candidate for an official name change to SEAGULL.
Please sign the petition to change the name of Heerman's gull to seagull. The renaming of the scientific binomial should be left the the experts, but a suggestion would be Larus nomen, which literally means "seagull name." It will bring birder and non-birder alike in harmony and unity as they will both live in a world in which the seagull does truly exist.
