The history books tell me that I am a child of slavery. A descendant of those who were plucked from their roots and planted in a country they weren't welcome in to begin with. I want to know more, and while I know some things, I only know it in the context of white man's history. I want to know it in the context of my own. Additionally, I want to know the history of the people of color who I work to validate. I want to know what the roles of Hispanic people were in the 1960s and of Asians in the 1800s, and of indigenous Americans before we came here. These accounts and stories exist as much as you and I, and are only partially included in common core history courses. People claim that every person's story is worth being told. It is time that I know my own.
