Lucas Radebe came to Leeds United as an unknown 25yr old. He was at a foreign land, away from home, lonely and missing his family and wondered if he had made the right decision, but Lucas did then as he has done all his life… He didn’t throw the towel in, he didn’t give up!

Lucas made his mark at Leeds United becoming the pivotal member of the team, wearing his heart on his sleeve, dying for the cause on 201 occasions. His legacy remains at the club and is recognised as one of the greatest Leeds United Legends of all time. However, this is not just because of his footballing abilities, Lucas was a leader, a pillar amongst the community, a man who shared nothing but compassion wherever he went or to whomever he met.

He has gained world wide recognition for his charitable and community work, been an ambassador for FIFA and SOS Children Villages, and was Awarded FIFA’s fair play award in 2000. There have been many other recognised awards for Lucas and despite his own personal grief he did not allow this to deter him from continuing with his community work.

Lucas Radebe has been recognised and honoured all over the world for being who he is, we feel that this has gone unrecognised closer to home, and believe that he should be honoured by Leeds City Council for what he did for the community of Leeds, and be awarded the freedom of the City.
