Make CPUT safe again

Bring back the rule of law and operate on ethics principles or CPUT will be in Zombie land were there are no rules.

I would like to see more updates of any activities as they happen on campus. We often have to listen to the grapevine to make safety assessments. Last year was a case in point. The little activity of this year was also not well-communicated and quickly as well. Rumour is not a good thing to react to, especially for those more psychologically affected than others.

Its a very sad situation in how management forgets about the residence staff at the volatile period of fees must fall. All other staff members are told to go home for their safety and we are left here with no protection whatsoever. Everyone is quite aware that all the damage starts at the residences but nothing is done putting the lives of residence staff and their families at risk. It is quite disappointing that there is lack of response from management in terms of offering safety and protection measures for residence staff when they are informed and quite aware of the situation. All the mayhem usually happens during ungodly hours disturbing our peace and sleep, mind you the kids have to go to school the following day. It really saddens everyone to see how things are turning out in this institution.

I agree with Neels Claasen - there needs to be mutual respect always between staff and line management.

1. There are too many different strokes for different folks. eg coming and going times of certain admin staff members allowed and others monitored. 2. Submitted sick certificates are questioned in-depth (Staff member has severe debilitating health problem).eg coming in to work after a hospital treatment session and the staff member is very rudely addressed and forced to fill in a half day leave form, even though a normal work day ensued.. This is harrassment at is worst.

Couldn't agree more with Jo-Anne Ridder, also experienced SRC barging my office, showing off name tags & asking if I knew who they were. I've worked with previous SRC members in the past & they were always respectful but that goes without saying, the present ones are a force to be reckoned with, & management are to blame giving it all their whims.

Management are failing all staff. Staff do not have a voice. It is true that staff are at the receiving end of thuggery and disrespectful behaviour by students and in some cases their parents as well. There is no protection for staff and students and their parents are aware of it and using it to their advantage. They know that there are no consequences. We work in an unsafe working environment and are vulnerable to criminal elements. Due to the Fees must Fall, we are overburdened with paperwork, work long hours without a lunch hour and have to make a lot of sacrifices which has become and expectation from management. I also noticed with the current SRC is that their leadership is under the false impression that staff are reporting to them and we have to take instructions from them. That is where i draw the line, I refuse to take instructions from a "child" who never worked a day in their life for an honest wage and only know how to create chaos and being rude and aggressive to staff. They come to the offices with their name badges and titles with students wanting to show their power by being rude, arrogant, disrespectful, aggressive and threatening staff. That to me is showing how weak they actually are with a lack of insight and understanding into their roles which they fill for a short period of time. With leadership come responsibility and students need to understand that although they are the client, they have no right to cross boundaries and violate staff. Their bad attitude and behaviour is a true reflection of what is going on inside the family home and they execute that behaviour and values on campus. I think parents need to understand that and learn their children that there are consequences to actions. I am still suffering from PTSD since last year. As a CPEUE member who has been greatly affected by the Fees Must Fall I am happy to see that our Union is looking at this matter and raising awareness to the rest of CPUT Staff Members and Management to make them aware of the fact that Residences as well as Residence Staff is one of the areas that were brutally affected and left alone without any help from the management. It is by the Grace of God that we manage to remain standing until the end, even though some of us broke down after it all. I urge the all those who have the same sentiments, to please sign the petition to show that safety and security during times like these is given to each and every staff member and not be selective . I personally felt that we were dumped and neglected, no matter how much we ask for help, there was no response and we just have each other for support. I was verbally assaulted, and racial assaulted by a student. I reported the incident to the University Legal unit but nothing was done

CPUT want us to follow certain standards, but when we request maintenance in the classrooms or laboratories, it doesn't get done. Give us the tools to do a good job, and maintain standards.
