With the upcoming presidential administration, it is more important than ever to support sanctuary campuses. I am beyond disappointed that President Mazey has taken a stand against this matter, and I hope that she will reconsider her position on this issue.

Frankly, I'm at a loss as to why this is controversial at all. Of course a university with a reputation for its history of social justice activism should become a sanctuary campus.

Students who are undocumented deserve the same rights as all other students and should not face discrimination from the institution they are attending. We cannot compromise on the safety and well-being of the students in our BGSU community.

BGSU makes claims of being a safe, inclusive and diverse environment. However, if we are not going to make moves to become a sanctuary campus, all three of those claims are immediately untrue. Undocumented students have a right to be educated here. For President Mazey to say that she would not support becoming a sanctuary campus immediately puts undocumented students in an unsafe environment. How are students supposed to learn if they don't feel safe?

We all have the right to an education no matter what. We also do not know how these next four years are going to be, so why not protect all of our students. Also, if the university needs so much federal funding, then why am I paying about 20000 dollars in tuition? And why is there going to be an increase?

A decision not to make BGSU a sanctuary campus will speak volumes to the students and faculty here. Not making our campus a sanctuary would be a direct contradiction to any claims this University has made about trying to be diverse and inclusive.
