One out of 8 people in the United States alone are deaf or hard of hearing. Which is about the same as people who speak Spanish or French. This meaning that American Sign Language is a more used secondary language than the other two that are currently being taught at Kenowa Hills Schools at this point in time.(Spanish and French)

The whole goal of Kenowa Hills is to give their students the highest possible academics possible and by making this a language it will increase these academics climatically.

Most Students would rather take a language that they enjoy instead of it being forced upon them to learn. School is suppose to be fun yet an educational thing. Yet most don't find very much enjoyment in learning.

There are other schools in West Michigan that aren’t as high in academics yet they offer one of the most influential secondary language. I have talked to Ear,Nose, and Throat Doctor Joseph C. Taylor and he has informed me that he believes by the patients he has seen and treated that most of the 21st generation will be deaf by the time of their first or second year in College. This could potentially help someone in the future so they can communicate if this may ever happen to them.

If this gets approved it could make a big difference and even make our reputation even better than we could ever imagine. It would open up the school for students who may not feel they succeed academically at a deaf school but they’d be able to get help if our student population at most knew American Sign Language.
