Asheville Middle School still uses styrofoam lunch trays, despite the fact that two years ago the school purchased reusable trays. According to Livestrong styrofoam products take up more than 30% of waste in landfills. Over 90,000 workers every day are exposed to styrene and polystyrene which not only makeup styrofoam, but can cause severe health problems like cancer. This petition is to hire a worker to run the dishwasher for the reusable trays we previously bought, and most importantly, eliminate Asheville Middle Schools overall waste.

I feel a bit overwhelmed seeing that one thousand people have signed this. This is entirely because of you and your commitment to a cleaner school lunch experience.

Styrofoam trays? Are they even recyclable? Why not have reusable ones that wash up easily in a dishwasher. Guess what...it worked when i went to school, because I helped each them at school as a job!

The volume of polystyrene in landfills is troublesome, but the amount that ends up in our waterways is horrendous. As it breaks apart it is consumed by wildlife and eventually humans. Thank you for starting this petition - every effort toward eliminating the use of these products is worthwhile.

My daughter and granddaughter are part of Asheville schools. We have outlawed styrofoam in Montgomery Ct, MD and the United Methodist Women all over the country refuse to use it. I hope you, too, decide to help our earth by banning the use of styrofoam in your community.

When I was in high school in 1990, I was successful in implementing such a change at my own school . Why is this still an issue in 2018? AMS, listen to the facts and protect your workers and the earth.

I would like to further extend this to all of Asheville City Schools. We have some new or renovated schools with fully functioning kitchens. Why is the seen as acceptable?

I am still having a hard time believing that AMS uses single-use, styrofoam trays in the cafeteria! I would love to see the school administration respond to this student's initiative and engage in a discussion with students and parents about what it would take to hire someone to run the dishwasher. It's 2018 and we know about the evils of styrofoam - let's not pretend otherwise.
