It is vital for our profession to maintain the highest possible standards on par with medical practice. I strongly oppose item 4 of the Sunset Advisory Commission Staff Report. The profession of psychology must remain independent so as to ensure the maximal oversight of this doctoral level field, both for the welfare of the public as well as the profession.

I am opposed to item 4 of the Sunset Advisory Commission staff report. We urge the Sunset Advisory Commission to remove the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TSBEP) from the proposed licensing board consolidation in [Senate Bill 611]. TSBEP is currently a well-run agency. In consolidating the board into BHEC, psychologists will no longer have authority to regulate the field of psychology, the cost for licensing is expected to increase, the timeline for licensing and resolution of board complaints is estimated to increase up to five years, and no long-term savings can be estimated.

I support retaining an independent board for my profession, so we can maintain high standards in serving the people of Texas. An independent board has been shown to process complaints more efficiently and can focus more on issues relevant to our practices. Given the level of training we need to obtain to earn our expertise, we deserve an independent board just as medical professionals do. We'd appreciate your fair consideration in these decisions.

Psychologists have specific professional standards which should remain separate from other behavioral health disciplines. Please protect the patients of psychologists in Texas by maintaining the TSBEP as is.
