I grew up in a town appreciated and known for it's rural character, Lincoln, and it had sidewalks. Many come to the town for recreation, and take advantage of the nearly town-wide sidewalks. The sidewalks, and the many interactions they facilitate, encourage community on otherwise isolating main streets. The construction of sidewalks in my hometown were largely a reaction to a deadly accident involving a cyclist. A Hanover mother was killed while running in Hanson a few months ago. I wouldn't want to have that happen in our town. I see kids walking along main roads regularly in the summer.

1. Mr. Smellie should have a walk along Main Street, preferably from Dover to South, at about 3 PM any school day. Then he would note that 2-ton SUVs do not need a safe sidewalk, however pedestrians do. A drastic difference regarding the want vs. need. Time for Mr. Smellie to perform some homework in order to be fully informed. 2. In the words of a famous opossum, "We have met the enemy and he is us!" We DO have a responsibility to the residents, after deciding not to take the Commonwealth's money for a widened Main Street.
