Petition to Revert to a Fair and Flexible School Lunch Program
To the Islamic Foundation School Administration Office,
We, the undersigned parents and guardians of students at Islamic Foundation, respectfully request that the current lunch program be reevaluated and replaced with a model that better serves the needs of our families and students. While we appreciate the effort to expand options, the new system has proven inconvenient, costly, and unreliable compared to last year’s program.
Concerns with the Current Lunch Program
- Pre-Ordering Requirement – Families must commit to ordering lunches one week in advance for the entire week. If a child is absent due to illness or other reasons, the paid lunch is lost, and the child goes without a meal. Parents also cannot opt for hot lunch in the morning if an emergency arises, leaving children without adequate food.
- Higher and Inconsistent Costs – Lunch prices have increased from last year’s standard of $6.50 to $8.50–$10.00, depending on the vendor, with no student discounts offered. On top of this, families are required to pay an outrageous $10 registration fee simply to access the new ordering system, which further adds to the financial burden. These changes make school lunches unnecessarily expensive and inaccessible for many families.
- Distribution Issues – Parents report that even when lunches are pre-ordered and paid for, some children did not receive them because they failed to notify their teacher. The responsibility for meal distribution should not fall on young children.
Why Last Year’s Program Worked Better
- Last year’s lunch program was affordable, consistent, and flexible for families.
- Pricing was reasonable and predictable.
- Parents had greater confidence that children would receive their meals.
- The system was straightforward and did not pose an issue if students were absent
Requested Action
We respectfully request that the school administration revert back to last year’s lunch program or implement a model very similar to it. Specifically, we ask for:
- Same-Day Availability – Parents should have the option to authorize hot lunch on the day it is needed.
- Fair and Stable Pricing – Lunches should be offered at a consistent, reasonable cost, ideally comparable to last year’s program, without additional registration fees.
- Reliable Delivery – All paid lunches should be distributed automatically, without requiring students to self-report.
- Absence Flexibility – Families should receive a credit or rollover option for missed lunches due to illness or other legitimate absences.
We believe that returning to last year’s structure, or one modeled closely after it, will restore fairness, flexibility, and peace of mind for parents, while ensuring that no child is left without a meal at school.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and commitment to our children’s well-being.
Sincerely,
IFS Parents
