A lactation room is a private room designated to breastfeed or pump and store breastmilk. It is widely accepted that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the six months. Breastfeeding provides numerous physical and mental benefits for mother and baby. Employers benefit from lower health care cost, lower rates of absenteeism, and increased morale.
Without a designated space, nursing mothers must figure out where to pump and how to store breastmilk which can be stressful and detrimental to the breastfeeding relationship.

I have been hearing from so many of you about the actual nightmare of finding a locked closet or a bathroom stall just to pump during the workday. It is honestly exhausting even thinking about the logistics some of you are dealing with and I am currently trying to pin down a contact in administration to explain why a literal bathroom is not an acceptable workspace for this.

Been there as a student/mother and let's say the library was not the best place!
Coming from an L1 mother still breastfeeding, this is greatly needed!! It's extremely frustrating trying to find a place to pump and store milk on campus. This would make it so much easier for students and workers and make an already stressed out mother a little more at ease. Just think... Less sick babies. Remember that IgA?
As a student worker whose boss is a lactating mother, I think it's only fair that she and others have a safe and sanitary place for breast pumping.
Mother and baby also need health environment, which include a more safe and private feeding room.
As a school of public health, we have to set an example for the community. By installing a lactation room, we can lead by example!

As a health sciences center, we should be leading these initiatives- we simply must have one!
