Lower minimum acreage requirements for backyard chicken keeping in Newberry Township!

I agree with the rooster limit, or none at all. You don't need fertile eggs to feed a family. Having a "Best Management" plan, which would outline a minimum care requirement (Clean out hen house once a month, provide clean water, possible set-backs for the hen house, number of hens to be allowed, etc.) Without, you will be surprised why will want to keep a hundred chickens in the backyard. A "BM" would go a long way in convincing others that this is a workable situation. If you can have something in place for noise and smell, then most can agree with the benefits and be supportive. Sustainable gardening, beekeeping, keeping chickens, or other community supported programs, are a good thing.

Please consider. This would be a much healthier way for a family to eat! No pesticides, no GMO, no way of getting any fresher then having your own!

It would be a great idea if the area required could be lessened because not all of have a lot of land to work with but the idea of have a substanable source of food is always good gor any family.

I support allowing people to have chicken on their land even if it's a smaller lot size. 2 acres isn't needed to raise a few chickens.

I support less than 2 acres,to have chickens and other farm animals.

As a neighbor in Lower Allen Township I encourage Newberry Township officials to discuss their plans with Lower Allen officials who have been able to foster a friendly microcosm of chicken keepers in residential communities of greatly disparate densities. From relatively dense neighborhoods such as Highland Park to undeniably rural areas on the borders with Upper Allen and Fairview townships, residents have been allowed to responsibly tend to small flocks that provide a wonderful cost effective and healthy source of protein and other essential amino acids. We have enjoyed thus freedom without any acreage restrictions. Residents must only comply with common sense animal waste and nuisance restrictions. This allows the personal freedoms residents should enjoy while protecting the property values and happiness of their neighbors. Please do not allow a few "bad eggs" ... or, "bad actors" to spoil such a useful, educational and just plain quaint, hobby such as this. It is far more effective to address nuisance issues through common sense, non-specific quality of life standards than by singling out a specific activity for regulation. Address the problems created by the malcontents, not the values embraced by the best of a community.
