We respectfully call on the Lower Merion Board of School Directors and Superintendent Copeland to officially recognize the compelling and vast body of research regarding teen sleep and its implications for student health, well-being, and academic success by agreeing, by resolution, to implement later secondary school start times no later than the 2020/21 academic year.
The high schools and middle schools should begin as closely as possible to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommended guideline of an 8:30 a.m. start.
By prioritizing healthy school start times and implementing later secondary school start times for the 2020/21 school year, the Board will demonstrate that the health, well-being, and success of our children are of paramount importance.

I was looking over the research again today and it just blows my mind how clearly this affects everything from grades to basic mood regulation so please keep sending me your stories because even if the board is quiet right now your experiences are keeping me going while I try to figure out the right person to corner in the hall.

Why are we lagging behind other high performing school districts such as Radnor & TE in following AAP guidelines and moving back the start times for their middle schools and high schools? Please institute this change for the 2020- 2021 school year.
As a therapist who has worked with teens in the area for decades, I am aware of how the level of fatigue increases stress. A later start time would definitely mean our teens would get more much needed sleep. Thank you for considering this.
I am a pediatrician and the mother of 3 children in grades 5, 8, and 10. I have seen first hand how the early start time has affected my HS daughter’s sleep and physical and mental health. Please follow the AAP recommendation for later start times for HS.
Please approve delaying start time for LM high schools. It’s absolutely necessary. My son only gets 6.5-7 hrs of sleep. He can’t go to sleep earlier, we tried. Why make them suffer if there’s scientific evidence that kids need more sleep and we need to do everything we can to help them.
They are sleepwalking and let’s not forget the weight they are carrying on their back(pack)s. He is tired everyday until lunch. A top notch school must consider the overall well being of the students, otherwise we are NOT setting them up for success. Lack of sleep makes everything harder.
Was this Dr. Faucci's idea. Lower Merion is so soft. Sorry boss I can't come in today my cicada rhythm was off!!!
This is a horrible idea that lady that says it is life and death is nuts. Also there are no lights at stadium. How will kids practice?

I support pushing back high school start times. However, I do not support having the elementary schools and high schools switch start times. Having school start before 8am is not ideal for any school aged child.
