The water that flows to and from these canals that are being gated off is public domain. If you dig a canal on your private property to make accessing it easier for whatever reason, then open it to navigable waters and use a resource that belongs everyone in Louisiana, then it becomes a navigable waterway thus making it public domain. If you want a private canal then it should be dammed off from navigable waters and you should net reap any benefit from using a public resource for private gain.

What will happen when all of the land owners and oil companies say no more? They will have enough and say, "no one is allowed on my property". Well guess what. With the current laws in place, sportsman will not have any where to fish. Almost every bit of land is privately owned in Terrebonne Parish, including main canal, ponds, thruways, and lakes. If we don't change something then no one will have area to fish or hunt. Tidal waters belong to everyone, and you can't own moving water!

If the marsh is private, then let the private "owners" worry about marsh preservation. Let them fund their own coastal restoration, river diversion projects. Don't use the public money for that! The government isn't going to restore any land that I own, is it? Why should it restore theirs? And any of the BP money that was going to be used to restore coastal wetlands? Only for public land. That goes to the public good, not private lands. If you suffered a loss from BP, do like everybody else, get yourself a lawyer and have fun with that. Cut the public funds if the land is private. Focus my taxes on public land for the people to have a place to fish.

This subject is getting out of hand. I hear now some land owners excuses are, for deer season at least, that the motor noise "scares the deer" most of these canals and bayous have had motored boat running down them for years. The wildlife there are used to seeing and hearing them.

What else they are trying to do take away all the fishing rights of everyone and our fire fathers must be turning in there graves for this. Yes i know there are bad apples out there but we just have to deal with it and turn them in when you see things happening and make them really pay for it not a slap on the wrist.
