Planet Earth II highlighted the growing problem of artificial light in towns, which disorientates Hawksbill turtle hatchlings to wander towards them instead of the sea. The babies traditionally use the light of (a full) moon reflecting off the ocean to guide them to the water, however, due to the electric lights, many go in the wrong direction and head straight into danger.

In their disorientation, the hatchlings fall down storm drains where they cannot escape. We want to see these storm drains covered with metal grid lines, making the drains still fit for purpose whilst saving the baby turtles from possible death.

Finally, Hawksbill turtles hatch under a full moon. We want to see the lights near the beaches where turtles hatch observe a temporary black out of lights seen from the beach, once a month/around the 5 days either side of the full moon period to minimise the confusion of the hatchlings.

With enough signatures, we hope these possible solutions will help make the amazing work the Barbados Sea Turtle Project does for the Hawksbill turtles a little lighter.
