Shannon Ray USA:The activities that Sargent Sand Co. has been allowed to conduct in Mason County flies in the face of all that our community and local governments purportedly stand for. The Mason County Master Plan clearly and concisely states:
This Plan is adopted by the Mason County Planning Commission to promote public health, safety, and welfare through planning for the appropriate use of land and water resources ...
The Hamlin Township website reports:
Today, Hamlin Township is the largest Residential Township in Mason County with a population of 3408 per the 2010 US Census. Hamlin Township provides some of the very best summer and winter recreational activities, with new and older homes blending for a delightful community with very little industry.
Obviously, the intrusive industrialization methods and practices that Sargent Sand Co. is continually allowed to conduct is at odds with both the Mason County Master Plan and with how Hamlin Township promotes and describes itself.
People come to our area to live and recreate not because it is a booming metropolis but because it is one of the very last bastions of unadulterated nature , beauty and peace. As stewards of this legacy WE all owe it to this magnificent area and the resources it holds to do our best to nurture, protect and safeguard its resources and all of its residents from any and all industrialization that has negative impacts. In the end we will either preserve a truly unparalleled sanctuary or we will allow it to be industrialized and striped of all we hold dear.

This needs to be stopped. One has to wonder how much they are making selling OUR sand for oil and gas well activities in other states? It is OUR sand

Show some consideration to the people who live near the operation! Operating hours should not negatively affect the lives of the homeowners in the area!

Having a family member who is directly involved with trucking of the sand as his employment I know that the trucks are leaving the lot at 6am and are running all day and into the night. I know that it takes 2 trucks to fill a rail car and between the two filling locations up to 60 rail cars have been filled in a day. That's a lot of trucks pounding the roads of ludington, creating an excessive amount of noise pollution, air pollution, roadside debris, and overall damage to the infrastructure. Furthermore I know that the drying plant cannot keep up with the limited demand for supply because despite the fact that it's brand fancy new and high tech, it's quite often broke down to some degree and therefore has to run well into the night to get caught back up. It's high time the towns people stop bearing the enormous burden of this sand plant and all that it "does" for our community. It isn't an asset to our community. It's a pain in the communities ass. It benifits a few dozen families and aggravates a few hundred. In the years to come it will aggravate more when the money has dried up and the highway and it's road bed is a pulverized mess for the community to deal with. Speak nothing of the destruction of an extremely rare and sensitive dune ecosystem and it's impact of loss.

They are practicing this mining in an unsubstainable manner, they have to be limited on what they can take out.

I will be contacting the attendees of the June 20 meeting between the Township Board, the Sheriff, the City Manager, the Roads Commission, and Sargent Sand. I will offer to get them the comprehensive information, from all stakeholders, which they appear to be missing substantively.

My house is near the back side of Sargent Sands mining operation and their are times when I hear their activities during the middle of the night also. They are in a residential area and I hope they will follow the hours this petition suggests.

Sargent Sand needs to become a much more considerate neighbor by resetting their trucking hours to 8:00 to 5:30 on week days and 9:00 to 1:00 on weekends.

Disturbing the peace, for profit! Have the citizens of Ludington no rights to a peaceful nights sleep or constant huge double bottom trucks going by every 10 to 15 minutes from early morning to late at night!??

Please give us some relief from the heavy, loud trucks moving through our city during the summer season. My small business is on the truck route and when they pass by the entire building shakes! There has to be a better way.

I am the president of AFFEW (A Few Friends for the Environment of the World). We have received many negative comments about the noise and truck traffic. I encourage you to change the time the mining can be done and also when the sand can be hauled.

Not only do the trucks cause noise and vibration, they also cause road damage. In addition the continued removal of sand from these unique dunes is unjustifiable

Mining for sand in Michigan's critical dunes for yet more fossil fuel fracking is destroying the planet. Michigan should shut it down entirely. The township could do their part and be a part of the 100% renewable energy world and eschew frack sand mining altogether.
