what has the state vet & dept of ag required of the large commerial growers who were effected by A1 .. ? What do they have to do to change their practices of raising poultry ??? Nothing ???? They are STILL allowed to restock barns with 10-20 Thousand birds .. That many stuffed into darkness to do nothing but eat & not move about so they put on weight fast to feed the general population. Is a discusting practice . A filthy practice also .
And because this is excepted by large corporations , stock holders & our own state dept ... The dieases will continue & be blamed solely on miritory migration birds.. With No proof they ever caused the problem. Tyson / Jenni-o were reimburst for birds destroyed . Where did that money come from ? None of the flock raisers were reimburst under the quarantine, for losses of egg sales or live bird sales.
Small flock owners can not get insurance on birds & considered a disposeable bird.. Most vets do not treat poultry & if they do the office all is more expensive then the bird is. So most back yard flock owners do everything they can to protect birds & health of birds. One loss hurts. We practice preventative practices to insure good health & stock .
Yes we are allowed to make priv sales of birds but just not at a swap sale . Why ? Was just fine for birds to be caged in same building at fairs- cages attached to each other or just inches apart .. Ducks, chickens, gamebirds all Commingling.... The reason we were given for no poultry at swaps was why ?? Commingling of animals ... the rumor has been for many years the state dept - state vet wanted swap sales shut down .
The day before the state ban of no poultry at swaps - i had called & was told - same as what was in news/ newspaper... No plans of doing as neighboring states & yet LESS then 24 hours later is on social media . They lied about that makes you wonder what other lies they have been telling .... As of today I have never been sent this notice on paper .

This ban is costing small and hobby farmers considerable money as we have no way to trade breeding stock and finished animals. It has already caused at least one small animal auctioneer to go out of business because of the ban. Please consider lifting it.

We need to lift this as backyard birds seem not to be the problem. And if fair can have them why not the swaps...swaps are better anyway as they are caged and away from others.

As historically AI has been a commercial issue and not a "backyard" issue, I see no reason to keep this ridiculous ban going. I feel it unfairly insinuates swap goers are the ones spreading AI when it has been almost exclusively commercial flocks being infected, I certainly haven't seen commercial poultry growers taking and selling their birds at swap meets. The current ban has placed a huge burden on small poultry owners and rare and heritage bird breeders who rely on these swaps financially as well as the people who rely on these swaps to buy the breeds they desire. They are not co-mingled, each seller has their own area with their own cages/crates and the swap lasts for max 5-6hrs. The fact that county and state fairs have still allowed poultry has me baffled, if there is any co-mingling happening it is happening there, with many birds kept in very close quarters with each other, zero bio-security with many fair goers able to go from one bird to the next, sticking fingers in cages, etc for 4-5 days in the case of county fairs, while state fair birds are exposed to other birds and people for a whopping 11 days, yeah, it's definitely the swaps you need to worry about... Do the right thing, lift the ban.

I really wish this could be lifted, my children are in 4H and FFA and it is really difficult to help them grow in the poultry area when this ban is in place and for really no reason. I don't see the difference from showing them at the fair and being able to take them to a swap. All we had to do for the fair was sign a piece of paper stating no deaths in 10 days. Why have a ban when the fair can still have them.

Don't punish small chicken farms, because of the commercial ones, have come down with this flu, while fairs and other exhibits can still have chickens and other birds.

People use descretion in not taking sick poultry. If cases show up against starting with cool weather, a ban could quickly be established again. Seems backyard flocks have low risk

Please consider the livelihoods of The hardworking citizens in this state as you continue your ban on swaps. All other poultry can be safely moved now so what is the issue? So many people depend on these swaps, and so do 4H kids and the rare heritage breed poultry that wouldnt exist if industrial hatcheries were the only option. We are waiting with bated breath for common sense to prevail and the oppression of backyard poultry fanciers to finally end!

With out the swaps so many poultry businesses can't sell there chickens. It's pouring a lot of people out of businesses out of service.

I wonder who decided this was how the problem was being spread that they banned all swaps. Maybe your department should actually do some field work in real life situations and they would of found the problem is with the big hatcheries not the small back yard flocks. we are diligent to take precautions and keep are birds healthy as we are caring on a personal basis. we tend to our birds daily. I think the dept. just put the band on swaps so it looked like you were doing something to take care of the problem. To bad you nearly destroyed all small poultry businesses that make their livings selling birds. Shame on you.

This ban is not needed to be against Small Animal Swaps/sales, we are not the ones you have to be leery of to spread Avian Influenza to the commercial flocks and other back yard raisers.
