Liberals for Democratic Debate
Canada is currently in a federal election because the Conservative Government was found in contempt of Parliament – a first in Canadian history and in any Western democracy.
The Liberals triggered the election through a non-confidence motion because, as Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff, put it: "Stephen Harper must be held accountable for a pattern of abuse of power, attacks on democracy, and contempt for Parliament and the Canadian people."
In the same democratic spirit, Michael Ignatieff has called for Canada's "broadcast consortium" (comprised of five executives from CBC/Radio-Canada, CTV, Global and TVA) to include Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May in the federal leaders' debates. An informed electorate is a cornerstone of democracy, and voters have a right to compare where all the major parties – particularly those funded by taxpayer dollars – stand on the issues. The Green Party is a national party that garnered almost 1 million votes (representing 1/15 of all Canadians who voted) in the last federal election and merits being represented in the Leaders' Debates.
We Liberals stand for democracy, accountability and transparency. We stand with our Leader and call on the consortium to include the Leader of the Green Party of Canada in the federal Leaders' Debates.
