To The Board of Trustees of Principia College, The following request is in reference to Principia’s current policies that affect homosexual students, faculty, and staff. The policies in question are listed at the end of this document for your reference. As the Trustees of Principia College, your role is to make decisions that guide Principia College into a strong future, and that create the best possible environment for its students. We feel that your support of these policies is in direct opposition to this mission, and thgus you are not performing your role appropriately as Trustees. WHEREAS these policies have a direct and negative impact on the recruitment and retention of students; WHEREAS these policies have a direct and negative impact on the generation of financial support; WHEREAS these policies have a direct impact on the mental and physical health of current and former students, faculty, and staff (as referenced in: A. Dozens of letters of personal stories submitted to Dr. Jonathan Plamer; B. The AMA removed homosexuality from the list of clinical mental illness in 1975; and C. The AMA stated in 2007 that discouraging sexual orientation has a direct and measurable negative impact on physical and mental health) (see below for sources/websites); WHERAS these policies are not based on the teachings of Christian Science (they are never directly addressed in the writings of Mary Baker Eddy); WHERAS the majority of current students are not in favor of this policy (based on polls conducted by the Principia Pilot student newspaper on April 2010 and February 2012); We, the undersigned current and former students, staff, faculty, and parents of The Principia, request that in your next Board of Trustees meeting on October 7, 2013, you vote to change these and all other policies that support the unfair treatment of students, faculty, and staff based solely on their sexual orientation. If you decide not to change these policies, we request that you issue a written public statement that states your reasoning, so that you may be held accountable for them.
