It's a disgrace that this district, upon discovering that Ms. Bailey wanted protections for workers who are commonly discriminated against, was placed on leave. This shows the immediate need for protections for other workers in the district, and should result in a full review of the actions of the school board against Ms. Bailey and other employees.

MHS Class of ‘92. Proud ally of LGBTQI students and colleagues. At best, the omission of rights for LGBTQI students and employees is an unfortunate oversight. By suspending a teacher, clearly, it is intentional. Public education should embrace all members of the public. Make this change now. Language matters. Identity matters.

As a gay graduate of Mansfield High School, I'd like to ask why it is OK to discriminate against gays. Are they men and women who don't live up to your image of what a man or woman should be? The men are a bit too feminine and the women a bit too manly? What forms can that discrimination take? Is it to be limited to name calling or is physical assault also permitted? Perhaps you should consider the mental and physical welfare of the students, whether they're gay or just slow to develop, and decide to ban both oral harassment and physical assault. The only acceptable approach is to protect the rights of students and ban discrimination.

Unless you did specify the grounds under which the suspension happened, everyone has to assume that it's because you don't like what Miss Bailey did re. LGBT nondiscrimination. There's no other conclusion. How can you say you don't discriminate, when you're not willing to tuck a few letters into the 'we don't discriminate against' list? What on earth is the issue here?

If everyone is included in the MISD discrimination policy then maybe they should change the wording and take out all other "protected classes" to just say "everyone is protected." Nope. That won't happen, so just add LGBTQ
