We, the undersigned, are petitioning the city of Lawrence, Kansas to allow pygmy goats as pets within the city limits. Across America, city commissions are taking an increasingly active role in creating policies that reflect the growing desire of their citizens to join the movement of localizing food sources, thus strengthening community and simultaneously providing a benefit to our health and environment. Goats have the potential to be an integral part of this movement. Most cities that allow goats as pets have ordinances in place which regulate the accepted breeds and size of the herd. 2-3 goats in the pygmy classification are standard. Goat owners have a history of responsible pet ownership and compliance with city code. Let’s be honest, not everyone is going to want a goat as a pet, but those who do can provide a benefit to their own families as well as their local community.
