Disgraceful. He clearly has his own choice and should be afforded the ability to make that. The people declining this should take a good hard look at themselves and realise just how lucky they are that they are able to make choices without other people dictating how they can/cannot live their life. Help the guy out not just for now but for the rest of his life by letting him go and learn in safety with experts in this field that will teach him to care for himself and provide for himself something so many of us take for granted.

To stop a young man seeking to develop himself in a manner that best suits his own needs is simply wrong on every level. It is these moments where complete support is required and should be given, a life changing opportunity is there and is being pulled away! SUPPORT MUST BE GIVEN!
