As an emergency medicine physician and researcher, the importance of community-engaged research has been underscored during this pandemic and in the epidemics of mental illness and gun violence in this country. It is through engagement and empowerment of the communities who are living through and striving despite, these public health concerns that we will solve some of the greatest issues our society faces today.

It is clear that a critical pathway to the elimination of health and health care disparities is through engagement with minoritized communities. Please ensure the new NIH director understands historic failures of dissemination and inclusive research and can build new bridges to ensure equity in research and intervention design.

I urge President Biden to center equity and the Social Determinants of Health during the selection process and appointment of a new NIH Director.
