Letter to the Board of Trustees of Whittier College - Football, Lacrosse, Golf

100% agree and very well written.

As a scholar athlete and a Franklin Society member while at Whittier, I am truly appalled at the state of affairs at my Alma Mater. The bonds formed on athletic fields and in the Franklin House is what truly brings me back to Whittier. Athletics has opened so many doors to first generation students of Whittier College. Without the opportunity to play sports at the D3 level many would not have become teachers and coaches within our communities and providing a shining light for future generations. I truly hope this decision is reconsidered and overturned. Respectfully, Jorge Rodriguez

Listen to the voices of the alumni. Sports like football bring diversity to the school and richness to the student experience. Football and lacrosse in particular are storied sports that keep alumni connected and raise awareness of the school. Rethink this decision.

This was a callous and financially motivated decision made by a group of people who are clearly dividing themselves from the WC community in regards to significant campus changes. Allowing no external input during their “3 year review” is further proof of this. The board and president are cowards and should step down immediately.

As a former Whittier lacrosse player this is a very sad day and the 3 year study should be released for everyone’s review.

I would just like to add that I was a long-running member of the Poet Men's Baseball team. If you are going to throw head injuries into the mix, then you honestly have to evaluate sports like baseball or even soccer where head injuries are also likely to occur. Additionally, I would like to add that the Men's Lacrosse team has probably been one of the most, if not the most, successful programs in the history of Whittier College Athletics. It has brought in numerous students from outside of the State of California and has raised Whittier's national status and profile in intercollegiate athletics, especially among East Coast players. I speculate that the decision to cut one or more of these programs, especially lacrosse and football, stems from more nefarious reasons. CTE is a convenient excuse. In recent years, the college has adopted an extreme woke agenda. This has long-term consequences, not only for current students, but for alumni and their giving decisions. The lack of serious thought or consideration of the long-term consequences to Whittier recruiting and retention is truly disconcerting and shameful.
