Peter Gotzsche is a heroic figure in the history of medicine and psychiatry. He speaks truth to power. This is the 21st Century. Must we continue to martyr our heroes like a medieval society?

This is another clear example that Denmark no longer respects the freedom of science where researchers do independent science driven by their curiosity. Only free scientific activity can lead to real and important new knowledge and understanding. Instead of supporting the best scientists in the country, the newly established bureaucratic “managers” in Denmark in these years attack the best scientists even to the level of sacking.
Denmark is known for the “Jante Law” by which no one should feel better than others. Management at “Rigshospitalet” and the universities apparently share such understanding, and they sack the best scientists in the country to get rid of anyone with an excellent performance. Unfortunately, this is by now typical for present day management of scientific institutions in the country.
This new development in Danish science will kill the previous high level of science in the country. Any scientist who has a high international status and respect may be sacked without any legal reason by envious managers without academic standing. Such managers should never be appointed to their posts and they should never be given their infinite power as in present day Denmark. Unfortunately, the leadership of academic institutions generally remains in the hands of such weak scientists (with a few exceptions).
I have myself been subject to similar action by management. The University of Copenhagen sacked me from my professorship after more than 30 years of employment. The reasons given were false accusations by envious managers, and a court case later reached the decision that my firing was illegal. One would expect the professor to be reinstalled in his position and the managers to be subject to sanctions from the university for their false accusations. However, such justice does not occur in Denmark where there is no labour law. The professor received a marginal economic compensation, and the manager even received economic promotion for their important contr

To be critical is one basic condition for being a (good) scientist. So the dismissal of a critical scientist speaks not of strength but of weakness - and manipulation, even corruption.
