Letter to Carleton University: ASL instructor

Hire deaf ASL instructor.

I fully support hiring Deaf instructors to teach ASL classes as the only proper and just way to run this program. I was a student at Carleton and I had three Deaf instructors and one hearing one. The quality of learning with Deaf instructors was incomparable to the class taught by the hearing instructor who had no knowledge of the culture and community and no respect for “voice off” in the classroom.

Needless to say, I do the same thing with the new year with the other hand, if you are looking for a good cause of action for the first time in the future.

There are many qualified ASL instructors who are Deaf and have that unique insight into Deaf Culture and how it is intrinsically linked to ASL.

I am an ASL teacher and Deaf .....I do not need an interpreter in the classroom.. ....

Academics at Carleton University are contributing to the oppression of people who are d/Deaf through unfair hiring practices.The integrity of ASL is not preserved nor is longevity of language protected . Such a disservice to linguistic and language education standards.

The key to strong ASL acquisition lies at the core of a Deaf instructor. The value is high and unmeasurable rich.

Step up Carleton, and give the dead community the rights that it deserves !

any ASL instructor should be culturally Deafie or fluently-ASLized CODA, period.

Hearing students will benefit immeasurably from Deaf instructors who have rich experiences and knowledge of being Deaf!

Draw from resources within the community that the studies cover, not from the mainstream. Shame on you, Carleton University!

Winnipeg’s U of M and RRC have a very excellent combined Deaf Studies 4 year program that Carlton should consider as a template for a program for their ASL Studies

I agree with many other deaf people that Carleton University must hire deaf ASL teaching instructor(s) to teach....NOT hearing ASL instructors!

I believe that deaf instructors should be hired and they need to stop hiring hearing instructors. It’s like a English speaking person teaching French language. You cannot teach unless you know the language fluently. By doing that all deaf instructors should take ASLPI and the appropriate steps to be able to teach ASL.
